At The Grown Up Ranch, we had the joy of transforming a 1960s ranch remodel in Redwood City, CA, into a gorgeous and functional home for our clients with young kids. Our clients were ready to invest in their “grown-up” home where they would raise their kids, entertain friends, and host their extended family throughout the year and during the holidays. This grown up ranch renovation included remodeling the floor plan down the studs and optimizing their home’s flow, functionality, practicality, storage, privacy, and flexibility. We refreshed every aspect of their home to create a family-friendly home design, renovated the kitchen, and reimagined each bathroom. We’ve curated a gorgeous space that will shine every time this family gathers or welcomes guests.

With every project, balancing form and function is key, especially when you have young kids. Our goal in each space was to optimize the layout, maximize functionality, and identify the right elements and finishes. While every element of this family-friendly home design of this home needed to absolutely withstand the daily wear and tear of family life, we wanted to avoid appearing basic or “kid-friendly.” Our clients expressed a love for bold colors and geometric tiles, which provided a great starting point in every space.

We took an incredibly intentional look at the layout and were very selective with the finishes. When it came to this family home, we wanted to create a sophisticated design but one that could also stand up to modern life with young kids, who are often not gentle. Just because your kids are young doesn’t mean you can’t have nice things now.
Beginning in the kitchen, we needed to create a space that is suitable for both serious cooking and hosting. We chose cabinets made from white oak to ensure they can take a hit. As the years roll past and these beauties are slammed shut, flung with backpacks, and experience the occasional collision, they will never show a dent. They will still look as beautiful ten years from now as the day they were installed. We then custom-designed the pantry with recessed doors to make mornings easier and to easily tuck away cereal, coffee, and other breakfast items for the rest of the day. We chose quartz countertops paired with ceramic tiles that stand up to the rigors of meal preparation and also look gorgeous while hosting.
Turning towards the bathrooms, each space was rearranged for better functionality. Including a taller room with a pocket door in the kids’ bathroom, and a private space for getting ready in the primary. We chose porcelain and terrazzo flooring for the bathrooms, then repeated the material with a concrete sink in the powder room. Every selection was vibrant, featuring various fun shapes and colors, while also being incredibly practical, durable, easy to clean, and low-maintenance. We carried this trend into the mudroom, where we used terracotta floors, which can withstand the rigors of lake life and all the sand that the kids will surely track into the house.
In addition to the fun tile, lighting also served as art that elevated the aesthetic of each space. We customized the stunning dining light fixture in a special size to ensure it would fit the space perfectly. Two other custom pieces were the stair railing and the front door, both of which were designed by MMID. We ensured that these functional, foundational elements were also visually stunning, adding to the home’s design and setting it apart from the status quo.

This home is now a beautiful reflection of both the joyful chaos of raising a family and the sophistication of our client’s personal style. Every color, texture, and design choice not only brings personality but also tells the story of the lives lived within the walls. From the high-gloss blue vanity paired with strié tile in the guest bath that will surely make countless guests feel right at home, to the braided sapphire chandelier anchoring the dining room, which will preside over thousands of meals. From the white oak cabinetry that will feed the baseball team, to the custom stair railing that will one day host prom photos, each thoughtful touch will play host to memories for decades to come.
