For interior designers, when it comes to our clients, we don’t have favorites…but if we did, these clients would absolutely be near the top of the list. At Tortoise & Hare Traditional, we’ve had the joy of returning to this lovely couple’s home again and again, designing and shaping spaces one at a time. When they shared that they wanted to turn their attention to the primary suite, it felt especially meaningful. After years of caring for everyone else, the wife shared, “It’s time to also take care of me, too.”

We could not agree more, and this idea of self-care guided every part of the primary suite renovation. 

With their love of casual, traditional design as our foundation, we imagined a space that felt warm, layered, and thoughtful. With our signature MMID flair for color and functionality, we didn’t simply renovate; we transformed this primary suite into a retreat that supports a life lived with ease. 

The Challenge: An Outdated Primary Suite Ready for Its Next Chapter

Limited storage, a builder-grade 1980s bathroom, and the wrong scale of furniture! Oh MY! Like many primary suites, this one had sat on the back burner of the client’s priority list while the hosting spaces took precedence. The bedroom lacked the same warmth and personality that had been infused into their other spaces. 

Beyond aesthetics, functionality is equally important. It’s one thing for a space to feel like a retreat, but if it’s frustrating to use, the effect will not last. Storage needed not just to be generous but purposeful; improved flow and privacy between the spaces was crucial; and each detail needed to function flawlessly to ensure my clients enjoyed their investment for decades to come. 

The Answer: Traditional Warmth With Tailored Function

We began by donating the existing bedroom furniture. While still in good condition, it had carried this couple through many seasons, and it was time for something new. In its place, we introduced practical solutions for their lifestyle. A built-in wardrobe by Valet Custom Cabinets and Closets created generous, highly functional storage while seamlessly integrating the television into the space. Larger bedside dressers added even more storage, and updated closet doors improved both access and balance in the room.

From there, we layered in softness and texture. A custom upholstered bench and headboard, both crafted in San Diego, ground the space. The fabric, an organic cotton and linen blend from Two Sisters Ecotextiles, brought a sense of richness and comfort.

In the bathroom, we worked within the same footprint but completely reimagined the experience. A new door created separation and privacy between the vanity and bedroom; the awkward tub was converted to a spacious shower; a pocket door between the vanity and shower area saved space; and blocking in the walls for grab bars future-proofed the room for aging in place.

Glossy, moody dark green subway tile from Fireclay Tile (made in San Francisco!) adds depth and interest, while a bleached walnut vanity brings warmth and much-needed drawer storage (always a win). Underfoot, a marble mosaic introduces movement and contrast, beautifully complementing the quartzite shower bench and countertop.

Every decision was intentional, nothing left to chance, balancing beauty, durability, and functionality. 

The Results: A Retreat That Gives Back Every Day

The finished suite feels calm, grounded, and thoughtful. The bedroom offers a sense of softness and order, while the bathroom feels elevated yet entirely livable; a boutique retreat designed for real life.

But more than anything, this space represents a shift.

After years of pouring into others, my clients now have a space that gives something back to them. A place that supports rest, ease, and the luxury of walking into your home and feeling completely at peace.  

And perhaps the greatest compliment of all: my clients shared that they would do it all over again and are already thinking about what’s next!
